  • Rise of the Tech Socialite

Do You Like the Tech Scene or Are You a Techie?

In the fast-paced world of technology, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement without ever truly diving into the nuts and bolts. The tech scene has its own brand of enthusiasts—those who love to be seen, who know the buzzwords, but perhaps aren’t as deep into the tech as they are into the social scene. We call them “tech socialites”. But is that you?

I AM TECH… that phrase is changing in meaning each time the hamster takes another lap around the wheel. In today’s digital age, being “in tech” is more than just knowing how to code or understanding the latest gadgets. It’s about navigating a dynamic landscape where networking, innovation, and social influence intertwine.

Is the only code you are interested in a QR Code with a discount to the next event? Is the only “stack” you’re familiar with a stack of business cards from your last networking event? Are you truly tech-savvy, or are you more of a tech socialite—someone who thrives in the scene but hasn’t quite mastered the substance?

Let’s explore the signs that suggest you might be more about the social than the software. If you’d rather know if you are a techie we’ve come up with 121 ways to do a gut check.

    1. GitHub is Just the Tech Version of Twitter to You
You like GitHub because you can the “like” repos.
    2. SQL Is an Abbreviation for a Movie Sequel
In reality, SQL is a powerful language for managing databases—but that’s just not your scene.
    3. API Sounds Like its About to Be in Your Tummy
API, to you, sounds like something you’d order at an Italian restaurant. But in the tech world, it’s a critical tool for integrating different systems and applications.
    4. Java? Isn’t That a Brand of Coffee?
You’ve confused Java with your morning brew, unaware that it’s actually one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Also. Java is NOT an abbreviation for JavaScript.
    5. HTML Sounds Like a its New Social Media Platform
When someone mentions HTML, you immediately think it’s the latest app everyone’s raving about, rather than the backbone of web development.
    6. IDE? Just Another Confusing Acronym
You know IDE is something tech people use, but you’re not sure what it does—or even what it stands for. Integrated Development Environment? That’s something you’ve never needed to know.
    7. Ping? Isn’t That a Game You Play at the Office?
When techies talk about pinging servers, you think they’re talking about a casual game, not a network utility tool used to test connectivity.
    8. 404 is the Only Error Code You Know
You see this all of the time but never stopped to wonder which other ones might be out there. Error codes are a mystery to you.
    9. Framework? Sounds Like a Blueprint for a House
You think of frameworks as something used in construction, not realizing they’re essential tools in software development.
    10. You Thought Discord Was a Character from My Little Pony
While you aren’t wrong, Discord IS a character from the show. When it comes to the world of tech Discord it’s a major communication platform where millions of users collaborate daily.

    Node Replication and Message Storage

    1. Partitioning Messages:
      • Channels and Buckets: Discord’s infrastructure is designed to handle an immense volume of messages. To manage this, messages are partitioned based on the channel they are sent in and a time-based window known as a “bucket.” This means that all messages sent in a specific channel within a given time frame are grouped together.
    2. Replication Across Nodes:
      • Nodes: In a distributed system, a node typically refers to a single server or instance in a network that stores and processes data. In Discord’s case, once messages are partitioned into these buckets, they are stored across multiple nodes to ensure redundancy and reliability.
      • Replication: Discord replicates each bucket of messages across three different nodes. This replication means that if one node fails or experiences issues, the data (in this case, the messages) is still accessible from the other nodes. This approach is crucial for maintaining data availability and minimizing the risk of data loss.
      • The dev team at Discord is the epitome of first class. They’ve provided us with fun interesting release notes since launch. They over communicate and generally care about their product and the impact of their decisions on its participants.
    3. Fault Tolerance:
      • Fault Tolerance: By replicating data across multiple nodes, Discord ensures that its service remains available even if one or more nodes fail. This is a common practice in distributed systems to provide high availability and reliability.
    4. Scalability:
      • Scalability: Replication across nodes also helps with scalability. As Discord grows and more users join, the system can add more nodes to handle the increased load, ensuring that the platform continues to perform efficiently.

    Why This Matters

    • Data Durability: Replicating data across multiple nodes ensures that even if there’s a hardware failure or other issues on one node, the data is not lost and can be retrieved from another node. This is crucial for a platform like Discord, where losing user messages or data could be catastrophic.
    • Performance Optimization: By distributing the data across nodes and ensuring that these nodes are strategically placed (geographically and within the network), Discord can optimize the speed and performance of data retrieval, ensuring low latency for users around the world.
    • High Availability: This node replication strategy is part of what makes Discord highly available and reliable, even under heavy loads or during peak usage times.

Discord’s use of node replication for message storage is a key part of its distributed architecture. By partitioning messages into buckets and replicating these across multiple nodes, Discord ensures that data is always available, even in the face of hardware failures. This approach supports the platform’s scalability, reliability, and performance, making it a robust solution for its vast and growing user base.

    Distributed Systems and Scalability

    • Distributed Systems: Discord does use distributed systems to manage its infrastructure. This approach ensures scalability and fault tolerance, allowing the platform to handle a massive amount of users and data. Distributed systems enable Discord to store messages, manage user data, and process real-time interactions across a global network of servers.
    • Cassandra Database: Discord utilizes Apache Cassandra, a distributed NoSQL database, as part of its data storage strategy. Cassandra is known for its high availability and scalability, which suits Discord’s need to manage large volumes of messages and user data efficiently.
    • Distributed Caching and Load Balancing: Discord uses distributed caching systems to reduce latency and improve performance, along with load balancing to distribute incoming traffic across its infrastructure. This ensures that users experience minimal delays and that the platform remains stable under heavy load.

    Programming Languages and Tech Stack

    • Elixir and Erlang: Discord’s chat infrastructure is built using Elixir, a functional programming language that runs on the Erlang VM (BEAM). The use of Elixir allows Discord to efficiently manage large-scale real-time communications. The Erlang VM is known for its ability to handle concurrent processes, which is crucial for a platform like Discord that needs to manage millions of simultaneous users and messages.
      • Cluster of Elixir Machines: Discord runs a cluster of around 400–500 Elixir machines to handle its chat infrastructure. These machines can process millions of users and tens of millions of messages per second, making Elixir a core part of Discord’s ability to scale.
      • Erlang VM: The Erlang VM provides Discord with robust concurrency, fault tolerance, and distributed computing capabilities, which are essential for maintaining the reliability and performance of its chat services.

    Message Storage and Data Partitioning

    • Partitioning and Bucketing: Discord’s message storage system involves partitioning messages by the channel and a static time window, referred to as a bucket. This means that messages sent in a specific channel within a given time frame are grouped together and stored in a way that optimizes both retrieval and replication.
      • Replication Across Nodes: To ensure data durability and fault tolerance, Discord replicates these partitions across multiple nodes. Typically, messages are stored and replicated across three nodes, which helps prevent data loss in case of hardware failures.

    Centralized vs. Distributed Data Storage

    • Data Storage: While Discord uses distributed systems, it does have central components to manage and coordinate the distributed data. However, it doesn’t rely on a single central server; instead, it uses a network of distributed servers that work together to manage and store data. Not exactly “decentralized” but a good start.

    Drawing it All Together

200M+ users monthly have found a community of people to connect with in Discord. They are using it for everything from gaming (its origins), to art/NFTs, and of course technology and education.

Is Discord for you? You’ll never know until you try but if you want to connect to a large and growing number of techpreneurs worldwide…Discord is worth a shot.

  • Celebrating the Brilliance of Black Women in IT

    Empowering Diversity in Tech

Today is International Women’s Day, a day in our month of Women’s History. I find it incredibly timely to bask in the joy of discovering a vibrant community within Black Women in Technology. It’s a celebration of sisterhood, resilience, and empowerment that fills me with gratitude and inspiration at every connection.

In the dynamic space that is Information Technology (IT), Black Women in Technology have found a friend, empowerment and solidarity, thanks to the tireless efforts of visionary leader Lori Mitchell. As the founder of our vibrant community, Lori has dedicated herself to championing diversity, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of Black Women in Technology.”

Being a Black woman in the world of Information Technology (IT)( and the Metaverse!) has its unique set of challenges. Every day, we confront biases, stereotypes, and obstacles that threaten to dim our brilliance. Yet, in the midst of adversity, we have found solace and strength within the supportive network of Black Women in Technology.

This community is a technical home —a place where we uplift each other, share experiences, amplify our voices and seek advice…as well as share in our curiosity and passion for technology. It’s a space where our achievements are celebrated, our talents are recognized, and our dreams are nurtured. Together, as women, we navigate the complexities of our industries with resilience and determination, knowing that we are stronger together.

This month we celebrate Women’s History Month and today we celebrate simply being a woman. We are not simply women, we share in 3 of the most challenging realms on this planet, we are Women, we are Black Women, we are Black Women in Technology. We both are challenging and creating a legacy that continues to support and shape the future of technology.

Always moving forward, we will continue to champion diversity, challenge stereotypes, and pave the way for future generations of Black Women in Technology, together. I’m grateful to have found my place within this remarkable community, thank you @Lori Mitchell, Founder, Technologist, Woman. #BWIT #BlackWomenInTechnology #BlackWomenInTech #Empowerment #Sisterhood #WomensDay #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM

  • Tyler Perry Has a Meta Mind Shift Moment

Tyler Perry has a Meta Mind Shift
Tyler Perry has a Meta Mind Shift

    Madea Goes Digital

The Meta Mind Shift. It means exactly what it says. A Meta Mind Shift is that moment when you discover what the potential of future tech and the Metaverse mean to you. This is what the Meta Mind Shift Consultation aims to do. I do this every day with my clients, but today as I read along in AfroTech, I stumbled upon this headline: “Tyler Perry Puts $800M Studio Plan On Hold Due To AI Advancements“, I instantly knew Tyler Perry had his own Meta Mind Shift.

Tyler Perrys digital Madea, exploring the possibilities of AI in film making, and production . Perry had a Meta Mind Shift.

In a groundbreaking revelation, Tyler Perry revealed his transformative perspective of the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in film production. The media mogul, known for his controversial but relevant contributions to the entertainment industry, recently shared his profound insights into the potential of using AI as a powerful step in revolutionizing filmmaking.

Tyler Perry’s $800 million studio expansion aimed to enhance traditional production capabilities. However, OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora, led to a significant shift in his vision for that expansion. Sora’s transformative abilities, creating 1 minute cinematic videos based on your desires, prompted Perry to re-evaluate his expansion plans, offering a new alternative to the future of his studio: an opportunity to embrace AI’s revolutionary potential vs continuing the established path.

When faced with the significant advancements in motion and animated video production by AI, Tyler found himself caught directly in a Meta Mind Shift Moment. This is what it looked like for him:

“I have been watching AI very closely and watching the advancements very closely. I was in the middle of, and have been planning for the last four years, about an $800 million expansion at the studio, which would’ve increased the backlot a tremendous size, we were adding 12 more soundstages,” Perry told The Hollywood Reporter. “All of that is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing. I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me.”

Ever the businessman, Tyler had no choice but to recon with the opportunity to Hollywood’s landscape. His legacy has been about gaining a seat at the table and establishing change for Black industry entertainers. Although some rumor mills have run amuck over the last few months, Tylers contribution to Black films have been numerous, which says nothing about the alleged treatment of both Black men and women on and off screen…but that’s a different moment in our time.

One of the most striking revelations from Perry’s discourse is his recognition of AI’s potential to streamline production processes and transcend geographical constraints. By leveraging AI, Perry envisions a future where the boundaries of physical sets are transcended, offering filmmakers unprecedented creative freedom and logistical convenience. Ironically, that’s a lot like the Metaverse…js

An AI rendering of Tyler Perry could be the next digital actor!
Perry points out the advantages of integrating AI, highlighting its potential to alleviate the workload involved in building sets for his productions as well as eliminating the necessity for travel to find the right scenery.

“I no longer would have to travel to locations. If I wanted to be in the snow in Colorado, it’s text. If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing. If I wanted to have two people in the living room in the mountains, I don’t have to build a set in the mountains, I don’t have to put a set on my lot. I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me,” Perry told the outlet.

Perry highlights the profound implications of AI on cost-effectiveness and resource utilization in film production. By reducing the reliance on physical sets and travel expenses, AI not only accelerates the production process but also optimizes resource allocation, ultimately enhancing the industry’s sustainability.

Perry’s embrace of AI underscores a fundamental shift in the way filmmakers approach storytelling and production. Beyond its technical prowess, AI represents a catalyst for innovation and creativity, offering limitless possibilities for visual expression.

As Tyler Perry embarks on this transformative journey, his insights serve as a testament to the boundless potential of AI to reshape the landscape of filmmaking. By embracing AI-driven solutions, Perry epitomizes the spirit of adaptation and evolution, paving the way for a new era of cinematic excellence.

    Decentralizing Everything

The potential of decentralized movies as a beacon of empowerment remains vastly underutilized. Thanks to the royalty system in NFTs, they offer a refreshing alternative narrative that celebrates the user over the empire, a sharp departure from traditional blockbuster productions epitomized by figures like Tyler Perry. It’s crucial to recognize that movies have been shaping our collective vision of the future for ages. However, amidst last year’s industry strikes, the unfortunate timing coincided with significant advancements in AI, particularly evident in AI-animated clips and motion-infused visuals, as well as in innovative applications like “AI SpokesPersonas by Technikole“. This relationship with technology extends far beyond mere entertainment; movies have become mirrors reflecting the future we are actively constructing.

In 2021, I had my first encounter with a blockchain-based NFT movie in a virtual theater, and within my Metaverse community, we dedicated every Friday of 2022 to films showcasing emerging technologies. Fast forward to 2024, where we’ve witnessed the introduction of Sora, featuring powerful one-minute AI-generated animations. The integration of blockchain storage solutions like IPFS and Storj with the Sora AI generation platform offers unparalleled versatility in style and content. Users can now assume the roles of producers, directors, cinematographers, actors, and actresses of their own movies using AI, and store them in decentralized distributed manners, representing a revolution in itself. Such advancements are poised to revolutionize not only marketing and advertising but also content creation across platforms like TikTok and YouTube, indicating a profound shift in the entertainment landscape. Just imagine the possibilities for Super Bowl commercials at a fraction of the traditional cost.

Tyler Perry’s Meta Mind Shift towards AI integration in film production marks a significant milestone in entertainment history. As the industry embraces technological innovation, the fusion of human creativity and artificial intelligence holds the promise of reshaping storytelling on an unprecedented scale.

  • Supporting Black Futures and Black History Month

Supporting Black Futures and Black History Month

As we celebrate the proud, beautiful and diverse greatness that makes up the Black community during Black History Month, it’s important to not only reflect on the past but crucial to take tangible actions that uplift and empower the Black community economically. One amazing way to do this is by actively supporting Black businesses, culture, and growth.

Often times people ask the question, how can I help during Black History Month (why not all) and also far too often, I can’t find Black Businesses that do X, Y, or Z. Frankly, the last one is appalling but I choose to take it as both a plea for help and and as an opportunity for discovery to solve a problem by flipping the question – “are there Black businesses that do X, Y and Z?” and if not that’s your answer. Go Fund that, make it happen!

We stumbled across our own discovery in 2022, the phrase “How to grow a Black business?” had a 0% search rate. Zero. How uncommon is that? You know who I asked, AI of course:

It’s quite uncommon for a search phrase to have a 0% search frequency, especially considering the vast amount of information available online and the diversity of search queries people use. However, it’s not impossible, especially for very niche or obscure topics that have limited interest or relevance to most internet users. It could also happen if the search phrase contains a typo or is very specific to a particular context that is not widely known or discussed.

    ChatGPT by OpenAI

The implications of this were just horrific across both ways of viewing it. No one was searching for it and didn’t that mean that no one was focused on building or supporting it? You can find a whole 10 entries as of today and a few of them are my own that I created to spread awareness. Looking at that differently, “how to grow a cat” has just under 1M. 🤦🏽‍♀️Anyway. Change takes time but it starts with awareness. With that being said here are:

29+ practical ways you can actively support Black business, culture, and growth

    1. Support Black Owned BusinessesWE ARE HERE! Black owned businesses are literally run by Black entrepreneurs in various sectors. They are people in need of your dollars that do a dern good job at what they do but may do even better with you, your platform, resources and patronage. Just type in ‘search term + Black Owned Business’ and review your results, scrolling down the page a bit shows the Google listing (similar to searching for a restaurant!).
    2. Donate to Black organizations: Contribute financially to non-profits and community initiatives focused on economic empowerment within the Black community. You can find them the exact same way as mentioned in item #1.
      Black Women in Technology logo
    3. Collaborate with Black Owned Entities: Seek opportunities to collaborate with Black-owned businesses on projects, partnerships, or joint ventures and especially federal opportunities.
    4. Support Black Artists: Purchase artwork, music, literature, and other creative works from Black artists and creators. This goes for NFTs and other digital art too, that’s not a new message from me, I’m just not saying it on Twitter this time. Try the hashtags #BlackArt #BlackArtists #BlackCreator #BlackPublisher on any given platform. [I’m also a Digital Artist, if you like my creations I can create for you or teach you how -> https://technikole.com]
    5. Attend Black Owned/Operated events: Participate in events, markets, and festivals organized by Black-owned businesses to show your support and appreciation. Go for the paid version! You can find numerous events geared toward the culture in your area on Eventnoire
Event Noire - Discover Events that Embrace
Culture & Community!
    6. Mentorship: Mentor aspiring Black entrepreneurs or professionals in your field to provide guidance and support for their career or business endeavors, most importantly on this one, do not make accessibility to receiving this mentorship hard or out of ordinary, difficult. Why – because this type of exclusivity is not helpful to those who actually need it but cannot spare the bandwidth because of “life”.
    7. Advocate for diversity: Advocate for increased representation of Black voices and perspectives in your workplace, industry, or community. This isn’t hard. We aren’t there yet where this is not an issue.
    8. Educational support: Support programs and initiatives that provide educational opportunities, scholarships, or resources to Black students and aspiring professionals. This one hits home for me and I’ll tell that tale one day. Just do what it says.
    9. Invest in Black-owned ventures: Consider investing in Black-owned businesses, startups, or initiatives through crowdfunding, angel investing, or venture capital. Research, then invest. Know that sometimes we look different on paper and your AI is still biased.
    10. Collaborate with Black-owned media: Partner with Black-owned media outlets, podcasts, or publications to amplify diverse voices and stories. Unless the topic is gossip, sports or fashion…I’m not referring to those. I am referring to every other type of media, podcast or publication out there. #BlackPublisher, #BlackMedia #BlackNetwork #BlackPodcaster #BlackMagazine #BlackVoices etc.
    11. Promote Black Excellence: Share success stories, achievements, and milestones of Black entrepreneurs and professionals on social media and in your networks. Amplify Black creators, again it takes 2.1 seconds to retweet, like or share. If you can do it for Katt Williams, you can do it for the local creator too.
    12. Advocate for fair policies: Support policies and legislation that promote economic equity, diversity, and inclusion in all sectors of society. Nuff said.
    13. Dine at Black-owned restaurants and cafes: Ya’ll know we have some of best food on the planet! support Black-owned eateries and coffee shops in your community to support local businesses and culinary entrepreneurs. But also, hire (qualified) Black Sous, Head and Master Chefs.
    14. Support Black-owned tech initiatives: Contribute to programs, workshops, or organizations that promote tech education, innovation, and entrepreneurship within the Black community. This one isn’t hard either. There a whole bunch of them directed at closing educational gaps including STEM, STEAM, STEEM, AND STEEM programs from youth up through college and even adulthood we have them too.
      Aisymmetry
    15. Donate tech equipment: Provide gently used tech equipment or resources to organizations or schools serving Black youth and underserved communities. Better yet, buy new and get donation receipts to support your own business at the same time. There is still a world where a $150 VR headset is out of reach for interested creators.
    16. Attend Black Tech Conferences: Participate in tech conferences, workshops, and events featuring Black speakers, innovators, and thought leaders. Your ticket purchase supports the event, the patrons and the speakers. If you don’t want to go, consider donating the ticket. Most of our major Black tech conferences have donations available. Also if you didn’t know we had these guess what! #WEAREHERE #BITCON #BlacksInTechnology #BlackIsTech
    17. Sponsorship: There are two ways to sponsor. 1 – Formal sponsorship via resources or donation, you align your logo and your essence to a specific event or cause. 2 – Sponsor via purchasing of access for individuals or organizations to attend conferences, workshops, or training programs in your industry or field (refer to #16 and Donate), make the unavailable – available.
      Blacks in Technology Sponsorship Deck
    18. Advocate for diverse panels: We are literally “0” years removed from the “largest” conferences in XYZ industry boasting 70+ speakers and not a single BIPOC or Black guest speaker. This is problematic. Encourage event organizers to prioritize diversity and inclusion when selecting speakers and panelists for conferences and industry events, and not just on topics of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Ask questions BEFORE buying tickets, look at the speaker roster, especially when speakers are paid to attend and lend their voices which leads me to…
    19. Offer speaking opportunities: Extend speaking opportunities to Black professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders at events, webinars, and workshops you organize or participate in. Open the door, invite us to register to be speakers, use speaker bureaus to search for diverse candidates and most importantly topics.
    20. Shop consciously: Make an effort to purchase products and services from Black-owned businesses, both locally and online. This doesn’t have to be just during Black History Month, this is a year round effort of consciousness.
    21. Mentor Black tech professionals: Provide mentorship and support to Black individuals pursuing careers or ventures in the tech industry.
    22. Promote Black tech influencers: Amplify the voices and perspectives of Black tech influencers and content creators on social media and in professional networks.
    23. Collaborate on tech projects: Partner with Black-owned tech startups or entrepreneurs on projects, collaborations, or innovation initiatives.
    24. Invest in Black tech talent: Invest in training, upskilling, or internship programs that provide opportunities for Black individuals to pursue careers in technology.
    25. Advocate for inclusive hiring: Advocate for inclusive hiring practices and policies within your organization or industry to promote diversity and representation. I know I always say this but #25 is not about entry level positions, this hiring needs to be where it can make a difference internally and externally. I’m not talking about “giving” positions to anyone. That’s a different animal. I’m referring to really seeking diversity in your upper ranks and being diligent about it.
    26. Attend diversity workshops: Participate in workshops, training sessions, or discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech sector. They are there, just search for them.
    27. Donate to tech inclusion programs: Contribute financially to organizations or initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in technology.
    28. Sponsor Black-owned tech events: Research and then provide sponsorship or support for events, hackathons, or meetups organized by Black tech communities and organizations. This can mean a world of difference. Even donating the use of a platform, meeting space or resource can create opportunities where there was none.
    29. Amplify Black voices: Use your platform, influence, and networks to amplify Black voices, perspectives, and achievements in your industry and beyond. This links closely with #22 but also places like LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest. Make it easy for yourself, its where ever you are.

    BONUSES

    • Bonus 1 – Give Reviews: If you had a positive experience with a Black owned business, consider leaving a review. Why – because it helps and we don’t often ask for it (we should). Takes 3.5 seconds to click a 5-star to post and keep it moving.
    • Bonus 2 – Learn about Web3 and how we can change all of this so that we move to whatever is beyond DEI programs and “be”.

By taking these practical steps, you can actively contribute to the economic empowerment and advancement of the Black community during Black History Month and beyond. I’m not a certified DEI yadda yadda, I’m just someone who has a Black Owned Business and comes from a family of Black Entrepreneurs. I am living, breathing Black History, walking everyday (article coming soon). I’ve seen the needs my whole life so when you ask how to change it, I can certainly provide recommendations.

  • Seeking Tomorrow, Starts Today

As we step into the future, we carry with us the spirit of those who came before. The innovators and pioneers whose creativity lit the way.

    Normatives

I used to think that I could not be an artist, that I was not creative in the way that creators create, artistically. I couldn’t shape a vase to save my life and the paintbrush was not my friend. There were never crepes or paper machetes in my toolkit. Nope, I definitely wasn’t an artist.

But in 2021, I changed my mindset. I was introduced to AI Generated Art (yes before DallE and before Midjourney), I began speaking my words into art. The technology shaped my words into beautiful and creative images. (Thank you to Kane and Low for slinging Gospel and Jewelry while providing valuable tips.)

    Transformatives

I create a new path, mainly because I thought it was cool to see the interpretations of words through technology showing up as artistic renderings. I immediately took my vision one step further and minted them as NFTs on the blockchain, inspiring a whole new type of empowerment.

    Ridiculation

My thoughts were challenged, people said it wasn’t art. People said it wasn’t “me creating anything”, people side-eyed me but you know what? I kept going and today, its everywhere. Its the “thing” to do (or not). Its more accepted now than it was then but still there are those that ridicule. Tell me what form of art doesn’t have its “haters” – sideeye right back at cha.

My main NFT gallery is called “GalleryOThought”, because that is what it is, the story of my visions chronicling my journey as we head into the reality of the Metaverse…and beyond. We’ve progressed SO much in just a few years, its cool to see what I did then vs. what I made today:

    Blaze a Trail

I think of trailblazers like Gladys West, the Black woman whose mathematical models were vital to the development of GPS in the 1980s. Decades before location tracking went mainstream, West had the vision to see its possibilities.

  • Avatar Origins

Origins | Avatars: Discovering the Metaverse

Have you ever paused to think about the roots of the term ‘avatar’? In our tech-savvy world, it’s a term we are beginning to use every day. Many of us gamers turned Metaversers had to acquaint ourselves with the lingo of an avatar as a somewhat upgrade to our beloved characters. Others recognize avatar as the little circle in the top right corner of many applications that house your profile context menus, settings menus. The avatar is also widely recognized as a company mascot or a customer avatar for your perfect prospect. And yes, the movie!

So the Avatar. What is it? Where did it come from since it didnt begin with gaming? While many accept it without question, I’ve found myself curious about its true beginnings. Let’s dive into the captivating history of avatars that you might be overlooking.

You may or may not be surprised to know that “avatar” has deep roots in Hinduism, where it signifies the incarnation of a deity in a human or earthly form. From these ancient religious beliefs, the concept of avatars has transcended centuries to become an integral part of our modern digital world.

    Descending Avatars

In Hinduism, the word “avatar” is derived from the Sanskrit language and means “descent” or “coming down.” It represents the embodiment of a divine being on Earth, often with a specific purpose or mission. Hindu mythology is rich with stories of gods and goddesses taking on mortal forms as avatars to restore balance in the world or to fulfill a sacred duty.

In Hindu theology, divine beings manifest themselves in earthly forms to fulfill sacred duties. The Sanskrit word “avatar, refers to these embodiments of higher entities. Major Hindu figures like Vishnu have taken on avatars throughout mythology, including legends like Krishna and Rama. They serve as saviors, restoring balance and order and reflecting beliefs in divine intervention to assist devotees in times of need.

    The Digital Evolution

From these ancient religious origins, the term “avatar” found its way into the digital realm. In our contemporary context, avatars refer to the graphical representations or characters that individuals use in virtual environments and on the internet. Avatars came to life in virtual worlds and online gaming a space where avid PC gamers surely feel at home. MMORPG served as a space to cultivate a character that allowed us to create and customize our digital alter egos, which were often heroes. We could explore, socialize, and work in a world where we were not limited by our physical forms. This was a game-changer in the history of avatars.

In sci-fi we experienced the world of the Avatar venturing into the moon of Pandora, where we meet the Navi and other creatures. The movies characters embodied the Avatar as a remotely controlled vessel for a genetically matched human mind and body, a hybrid creature of sorts, composed of human and alien DNA. Humans donned their blue Avatar (techni-body) suits that enabled them to experience the world as a member of the Navi Avatar species.

    Metaverse and Beyond:

Today, avatars are actually at the heart of the Metaverse, a world I am passionate about as an Digital Transformation Consultant. The Metaverse is all about extending ourselves into a digital space, and avatars serve as our vessel to the experience. We don a Digital Twin or Avatar as our representatives in this expansive virtual realm, enabling us to attend meetings, collaborate, and even party, all while staying in our pajamas in the physical world.

It is that time of year where some celebrate Halloween – where people playfully embrace the idea of masks and disguises, embodying different personas for a night. It’s a celebration of sorts, a type of transformation, akin to the Hindu concept of deities taking on earthly forms as avatars. Though many tend to celebrate by selecting their favorite serial killer, princess or teapot, while just as many don sheets representing togas and their favorite a pair of Jesus sandals head to church as Ruth, King David or even Jezebel. In all cases, the person dresses up as someone else. People literally become someone or something else, even if just for a short time.

I personally do not engage in traditional Halloween and I am vocally distant from the idea of being referred to as the ‘Metaverse Goddess’; I sometimes find myself wrestling with the term ‘Avatar’ as a form of watered-down idolatry. I want to be transparent about this, as it’s a part of who I am, there is some stuff that I question. Because I help others explore their visions of the future and navigate the evolving technological landscape I continually strive to do so myself. Questions generally lead to discovery and that’s what this space is all about, discovering what works for you, your community and your business.

As I work to unravel the complexities of the digital age and my own desires and convictions, it reminds me of the central themes in my latest entry of the Ultimate Zombie Apocalypse Guide for the Future entitled: ‘Technical Twin: Imposter Code.’ In this imaginative glimpse into a technologically enhanced tomorrow, I delve into the unsettling concept of a zombie apocalypse brought about by our own technological creations coupled with our insecurities as a species. I explore the ramifications of decisions that lurk beneath the surface of our digital advancements, raising questions about our own relevancy and our actions in the realm of technology.

Technology is not God, the day that it desires to be we might just be in trouble. We must continually question what it is that we are doing with emergent tech like AI, in order to make the best use of it for the long haul. Just as I challenge the implications of a technological apocalypse in ‘Technical Twin,’ I am equally committed to examining the delicate balance between faith and technology in my everyday life while helping others navigate the digital landscape.

  • 30 Days of Metaverse: The Next Leap Forward

Welcome to the 2nd Annual 30 Days of Metaverse Challenge!

    Think, Mint, Buidl, and Explore

In the footsteps of the successful #30DaysOfCode initiative and our inaugural #30DaysOfMetaverse challenge last year, we’re back with an exciting and more expansive project. This year, our focus is not just on creation but also exploration and immersion in the rapidly evolving Metaverse.

The Metaverse is coming together, piece by piece, and we’re playing a pivotal part in shaping it. As we continue our journey into this virtual realm, it’s time to not just imagine but to build, explore, and interact within our collective futures.

    Goals for the Metaverse 2.0

This isn’t a traditional NFT project. It’s an evolving, decentralized catalog of collections united by a shared vision and the hashtag #30DaysOfMetaverse. Your contributions, whether they’re imaginative metaverse creations, AI generations, blockchain games, or immersive 360 backdrops, will be part of this movement.

The goal remains the same to capture this moment in time, envision the world we want to see in the Metaverse, and minting that vision onto the blockchain. But this year, we are also encouraging participants to explore the Metaverse and share their unique experiences as they engage with others’ creations.

    How to Participate:

    Definition of the Metaverse

This year, we’re pushing the boundaries of our definition of the Metaverse. It’s not just about envisioning your own part of it anymore it’s also about experiencing, understanding, and appreciating the Metaverse as it grows and evolves.

    The Genesis Collection

Last year’s collection was hosted on Ethereum and Polygon. I used generative art (AI) at a time when it wasn’t as widely accepted as it is today. Last year I created from my thoughts visualizations of what I thought about when I thought about my future and our collective futures in the Metaverse. My artwork included StarryAI and a touch of Dalle2. I committed to a process – think, create, mint – everyday for 30 days. There were times when I was tired and little sleep deprived but I did it. My collection is out there. And you know what, not a single soul bought an NFT. 30 Days I pondered and created and ideated. My creations were varied and included descriptions, some had animations others had IPFS extras as unlockables and 2 even had scholarships for Google Career Certificates. Utility was real. The collection went 100% unsold and its still out there dangling on Opensea. But that wasn’t the point for me and is certainly not my measure of success. The point was the process. I did it, at a time when not many others were. I entered July fully satified with myself.

This year, I’m excited to see what new visions and experiences will be added to our Metaverse. This year SOOOOOOOOOOOO much has changed. The world is sorta starting to get the point. AI adds a whole new flavor to everything we are doing and this year no exception. Starting June 1st, 2023, join in on the #30DaysOfMetaverse movement. Take the challenge, think about the Metaverse and what it means to you and then mint it on the blockchain.

    Daily Steps

    1. Commit to exploring and contributing to the Metaverse for 30 days.

    2. Create or engage with some form of Metaverse content every day for June 2023. (or any month you start your challenge)

    3. Mint your creation or experiences as an NFT on Polygon or the blockchain of your choice.

    4. Share your daily adventures and creations on Twitter or Instagram or your blog or wherever you are with the hashtag #30DaysOfMetaverse.

    5. Foster community and accountability by sharing your journey with your audience, followers, and community.

    Optional:

Collect an NFT that resonates with you anyone using the #30DaysOfMetaverse hashtag and share why it captured your imagination.

    Augmenting Your Creativity with AI

In this year’s 30 Days of Metaverse challenge, we’re embracing the power of AI to amplify our creative capabilities. Artificial Intelligence is here to supplement our creativity, not supplant it. It is a tool for us, a paintbrush of sorts that opens doors and new pathways to discovery and exploration. Whether you’re using AI to generate new ideas, create virtual characters or avatars, build dynamic environments, or even produce AI-assisted artworks, it’s all a part of the broader journey for digital transformation.

AI can help you create content faster and explore concepts beyond your usual realm of thinking. It can inspire you with unexpected ideas, generate content based on your specifications, and help you fine-tune your creations. But remember, while AI is a powerful tool, it’s your vision and creativity that bring your Metaverse to life. AI is there to augment your imagination, not replace it.

Don’t shy away from using AI in your 30 Days of Metaverse journey. Consider it a creative partner, an assistant that’s there to help you realize your vision.

Whether you’re new to AI or have been harnessing its power for years, we encourage you to integrate it into your Metaverse creations. After all, the Metaverse is a space where technology and imagination meet, and AI has a significant role to play in its evolution.

    Tips For The Journey

    • Label your days numerically.

    • Name your collection and creations with the hashtag #30DaysOfMetaverse in the description.

    • Sign your creations literally. (put your stamp of approval on it)

    • Tell a story about your creations or experiences in the description of the minted NFT. This doesn’t have to be long, but it should be personal.

    • Try new things: explore different metaverses, play blockchain games, experiment with AI, or try drone photography.

    NEW TO THIS?

Newbies are welcome! I highly recommend you try Spatial.io as a great place to take your first steps into the Metaverse and Twitter as well for communications and accountability. If you’ve never made an NFT before but do have a blockchain wallet – you can create your heart out over at Poe.xyz – this is the POETs platform. POET stands for Proof of Experience. You put in your media, fill out as much as you’d like to and then click Create. You will receive an onscreen QR code and link to claim. Go ahead and claim your own experience. Congratulations you’ve just made an NFT! It will appear wherever Polygon-based NFTs are rendered. Be sure to post about it. if you can’t find the NFT, check your hidden folder.

    Notes

This project is Open to All, includes all types of renderings and experiences, and is blockchain agnostic.

You don’t have to be an artist or a creator to participate. Everyone has a unique perspective to bring to the Metaverse, and we’re excited to see what you come up with.

I’ll be doing this daily so if you want to follow me will always (try to) post to Twitter, BlueSky and Instagram is a hard maybe. https://twitter.com/iamtechnikole

    Utility

By participating in #30DaysOfMetaverse, you’re not just creating or and are certainly never a consumer you’re becoming a part of a decentralized movement. This is an opportunity for self-discovery, community engagement, and creative expression.

  • Memoirs: NiKole Maxwell | International Women of Blockchain (2022)

Introduction: Sometimes it is important to capture experiences for yourself, for the blockchain. This is a recap of my participation in the International Women of Blockchain Conference held during the 31 days of March of 2022. When reading this please note, I took a year and some change to write it. Be mindful this adventure happened in early 2022, the world wasnt where it is today, not yet. The experience was truly historical and sometimes, you need to pat yourself on the back and say hey girl – YOU DID THAT! So this is the opportunity I never took to relish in what I did, what I was a part of and who I am and who the Metaverse is to me.

Who: NiKole Maxwell, Co-Organizer Executive Producer, also appeared as Technikole (avatar form)

What: International Woman of Blockchain (IWB) presented by Black Women in Blockchain (BWBC). IWB was a 30-day celebration of women that took place each day of March 2022 for 3 hours celebrating over 100 women of the blockchain. It was historical and sparked a movement.

During the International Women of Blockchain conference, I managed the production and moderation squad behind the scenes, spearheaded the innovative ‘Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse’ a series of 4 sessions designed to help participants acclimate to the Metaverse discovery where I kicked things off with my presentation, “Introduction to the Metaverse” (March 2022). I poured my heart into much of the production with my favorite moment being the appeared as my avatar in the “Immersed VR” platform streamed live into our production, and I enjoyed managing the logistics for our keynote speakers, fostering global connections among women in technology.

This is one of the NFTs created to commemorate the event - the only authorized holders are member of the production squad. Truly International Women of Blockchain.

    COMMITMENT

My organization invested over 120 labor hours (whew!) to support this women-centric celebratory event. In addition to planning and coordination, my initiatives included designing, implementing, and donating a comprehensive Discord server with customized bots and other vital assets styled to the occasion.

    IMPLEMENTATION

Production of this 31-day event was no small feat, every day demonstrating some form of technical (Technikole) support. To prepare our roster of 100+ speakers and varied hosts, I prepped the Discord for onboarding including a video as a part of pre-event preparations. We used Discord for many things including a project management hub when Trello proved too complex for our diverse set of women. Discord also served as a green room for staging each day as we prepared for the conference. Conference administration was also stationed in the Discord server with both the mods and the admin having their own space along with the committee members from around the world. After the event each (most) days we would joint stream live rooms to recap and continue the celebration on Clubhouse, Discord and even on Twitter Spaces.

    METAVERSE EXPERIENCES

I was able to take the conference on an adventure into the world of Virtual Reality, designing and creating two unique metaverse experiences for the organization in Spatial (in early 2022) inclusive of integrated NFTs. To commemorate the event, I utilized advanced AI GAN techniques to craft one-of-a-kind generative art pieces. One of my most fantastic, treasured and distinctive pieces was created, donated and launched as my genesis to the Solana blockchain.

    BUDGET FRIENDLY

Through strategic decision-making, I enabled the organization to realize substantial savings. By opting for an alternative service to run the production, we managed to save the organization $180K. The success of this event epitomizes my capabilities in event management, technological innovation, financial prudence, and commitment to advancing people in the world of Metaverse empowered with Web3, powered by blockchain technology.

Bonus I: Shots out to the moderation without you guys this would have never happened: Cory Clay, Najah Roberts, Natasha Rivera, Tam Fitzgerald and Olayinka Odineran (Yinka, Event Creator)

Bonus II : I was also thrilled to appear on Ahead of the Crypto Curve with Najah Roberts on Tavis Smileys, KBLA 1510 marking my second appearance to discuss the Metaverse and transformation ahead of us.

    Technologies Used:

Spatial.io for Metaverse experiences, Ethereum and Solana blockchain (NFTs), Streamyard for streaming, Canva for NFT development and other assets, Ready Player Me, Facerig (now Animaze) Avatar presentment, Immersed VR – virtual desktop and corporate experience, Discord and Clubhouse for communications, Oculus VR headset

    Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse

Produced and hosted by NiKole Maxwell during the International Women of Blockchain Conference, 2022

Week 1 – Introduction to the Metaverse, Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse, March 4th, 2022.

I kicked things off with my “Introduction to the Metaverse” presentation to help level-set where we were going and what this thing was all about. At the time, the Metaverse was not “understood’. Even today I don’t think it’s understood some 18 months later. People were blown away and we hadn’t even stepped foot it in yet.

Next up, one of my favorite ladies around the Metaverse, Artsy in VR. I’d had the pleasure of hanging out and getting to know Artsy almost a year before this and we’d had several opportunities to connect in various spaces and stages but this one was special for a lot of reasons. This was good sista-girl time for sure and absolutely one of the fan favorites for this event.

Theres no women in football much less the blockchain…tell that to Adrienne the 10. Adrienne is many things including a woman and a football player. She dropped in to tell us a thing or two about the Cardano blockchain, emission-less NFTs and her GQNFTs. Sustainablity much? Oh yeah we got that too. Her project paved the way for women in sports and NFTs.

Myriam from Crypto Gang Clash spoke to us about what its like to be one of the only women on an NFT project and whether or not your voice is heard. At the time, you can guess the answer. Its nice to see some progress being made for the women around the globe since then but we’ve still got a long way to go.

Week 2 – Discover the Metaverse, Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse | March 11, 2022

This week it was really important to showcase the Metaverse to allow our viewers to get an idea of what it could mean for them. HTC had just launched the concept videos for Viverse and at the time I thought it was the coolest thing so full possibility. Then I appeared in my VR headset and gave the folks a quick walk-through of “First Steps in VR” where we played a shooter, bopped a tether ball and danced with a robot, live in front of a studio audience…virtual studio audience lol.

Breanna Faye took us on a deep dive into the mechanics of the Metaverse with her presentation on Defining and Designing the Metaverse.

We ended the day bringing some of the ladies together including Charmaine Short and Cory Clay along with Yinka Odeniran to have more girl talk. Really woman talk. We discussed some fears and discomforts of the Metaverse, we talked headsets for women and lightly touched on some taboo topics. The reality is that each of us was in different stages of our discovery and exploration. The journey was fantastic to experience.

Week 3 – Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse, March 18, 2022

This day I lined up Courtney Savoy Harper, a VR and STEM educator from the Washington DC area. During our interview, we discovered that not only was Courtney at work with her students, but they also had a fire drill! I could not believe the professionalism Courtney demonstrated as we continued the interview.

Next up was Pamela aka theBrickerati talking to us about the future of “community”.

We spent some time discovering artists of a different kind. Grammy nominated Jeanine Smith spent some time with me and showcased her NFT journey with Sorority Records and her newly minted and released track.

STEM educator Natalie “WaterGirlRAW” Hannas shared her soul with us as she spoke about her dad and her NFT journey to be seen.

Week 4 – Final Friday, Grand Finale of Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse

I wanted to do it big for the grand finale. We went Metaverse world hopping. I took everyone into multiple Metaverse to drive home the idea that you can find the metaverse that works for you and that you aren’t limited to just one type of experience.

Metaverse Finale!! International Women of Blockchain Futuristic Fridays in the Metaverse concludes with the Women of Domaining (Patricia Riveria and Diana McClure) We went Metaverse Hopping through Decentraland for fashion week, , the African Museum of the Metaverse in Cryptovoxels with Nes Rox and umped into Connect.Club the metaverse for mobile. We also had a candid discussion about safety in the Metaverse with some of the Metaverse guest speakers, including Charmaine Short.

Final notes: I’m missing some experiences and screenshots. Please note this isn’t intentional I tried to replay the 12 hours of this segment as much as possible but I may have simply missed it. Love me anyway!

  • And Then There Were DAAs…

DAAAAA!!!! Decentralized Autonomous Applications are coming #soon!

Ta -DAAAAAA ==> Decentralized Autonomous Applications

DAAs are the coolest new thing in the tech world, combining the power of blockchain technology and AI to create fully autonomous applications that can manage themselves without human intervention.

Theyre self-sufficient, boasting the ability to self-manage, self-scale, and self-replicate. DAAs appear to be the OMG-finally solution for any application that requires high levels of automation, scalability, and security. These revolutionary applications have the potential to transform industries such as finance, healthcare, and logistics, possibly making them the future of the Internet and AI.

Self-manage, self-scale and self-replicatewere missing self-soothe but then wed be on the doorsteps of sentience. Thankfully, thats not exactly what we are talking about here.

I jest, but the concept of Decentralized Autonomous Applications (DAAs) is exciting and has the potential to disrupt many industries but it also highlights some of the challenges that the Metaverse will face. The Metaverse is the next way that we experience the internet, our virtual universe where we can interact with both technology and each other in a shared space. The ultimate goal will require a high level of automation, scalability, and security to support a large influx of users and a new wave of applications. (based on the blockchain).

DAAs, with their self-management, self-scaling, and self-replication capabilities, are a step towards achieving this level of automation. Moreover, as with any major shift in technology, the Metaverse will have to overcome and embrace several challenges, such as governance, security, and privacy. With DAAs (much like DAOs), it is important to ensure that they are developed ethically and with proper structures in place to prevent them from acting against the interests of the users.

DAAs are an exciting approach to tack on to decentralization and they have the potential to transform industries, paving the way for the Metaverse to progress. With that being said, we need more participation, especially as advanced automation and community-based governances raise new ethical considerations while abolishing old ones.
